39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting
The 39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting hosted virtually by Brunei Darussalam on 15 September 2021 adopted the Bandar Seri Begawan Joint Declaration of the 39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy on Energy Security and Energy Transition, which reaffirms ASEAN Member States’ shared commitment and collective responsibility in the pursuit of energy security and energy transitions.
The Vietnamese delegation, led by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien. As part of his opening speech during a meeting held on September 15, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien announced the transfer of the chairmanship role of AMEM 2021 to Minister of Energy of Brunei Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Haji Md Hussein.
Minister Dien thanked and highly appreciated the support shown by ASEAN member states in helping the nation to fulfill its role as AMEM 2020 Chair. As part of the occasion, he congratulated participants and expressed his confidence that Brunei will be successful in the role of AMEM presidency in 2021.
During the event, ASEAN Energy Ministers issued the Bandar Seri Begawan Joint Statement on Energy Security and Energy Transition to affirm the will to jointly pursue the goals of regional energy security and transition.
The Joint Declaration articulates the huge financial, investment, and technical as well as cross-sectoral and cross-pillar support needed to deploy advanced, cleaner and low carbon energy in the region. It also calls for concrete actions to develop robust policies and measures and to strengthen national, bilateral and multilateral energy programmes and projects that enhance energy resilience and improve energy security to form the foundation of an inclusive and energy transition.
