On the morning of June 11, 2021, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien chaired a courtesy meeting with Ambassador Giorgio Aliberti, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Viet Nam to discuss bilateral cooperation and implementation of the EU – Viet Nam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).
At the meeting, the two sides affirmed the importance of the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and the European Union (EU), especially in the fields of economy, trade and energy. At the same time, both sides are committed to continue to coordinate closely and more effectively to promote cooperation activities and programs in the coming time, as well as promptly resolving relative matters between the two sides.
In his remarks, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien congratulated the EU for its efforts and positive actions in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, which have helped initially control the disease in the region and setback further threats to the economy. With many economic indicators recovering positively, along with the implementation of budget support programs and an expanded vaccination campaign, the EU economy is expected to quickly recover and grow again.
The Minister also expressed his optimism about the development prospects of trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and the EU in the context that the global economy and trade are still facing many difficulties due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, the two-way trade between Viet Nam and the EU in the beginning of 2021 has witnessed a positive growth thanks to the implementation of the EVFTA since August 1st, 2020. According to statistics of the General Department of Vietnam Customs, in the first 04 months of 2021, the import-export turnover of Vietnam - EU reached 18.26 billion USD, up by 20.1% over the same period in 2020.
Considering the EU's strengths in high-tech, renewable energy, machine automation, mechanical engineering..., Viet Nam wishes to attract investment and technology transfer from the EU to develop a strong and modern industry, especially promote the development of processing and manufacturing industries, supporting industries, fields of innovation and new technology transformation. Minister Nguyen Hong Dien emphasized that Viet Nam calls on EU corporations and businesses to invest in the field of vaccine production in Vietnam, focusing on the transfer of vaccine technology, with the goal of ensuring the public health and safety in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
The two sides had very open and positive exchanges on issues and strategies to strengthen bilateral cooperation, as well as effectively implement the EVFTA Agreement in the coming time to ensure practical benefits for the business community. The Ministry of Industry and Trade hopes that the EU, represented by the EU Delegation in Ha Noi, will continue to support and give valuable priorities to promote cooperation programs and projects, especially in the field of energy and energy transition in Viet Nam, particularly the EU-Vietnam Sustainable Energy Transition Program (SETP) and the Vietnam Energy Partnership Group (VEPG).
