Digital economy expected to account for 20% GDP by 2025

Viet Nam has set goal to increase the GDP share of digital economy to 20% by 2025, according to the latest Resolution No. 52-NQ/TW of the Politburo on guidelines for participation in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The Party expects to raise the broadband Internet coverage rate to 100% (accessible by all communes) and labor productivity by 7% annually from now to 2025.

Viet Nam will also try to become one of the three leading ASEAN countries in terms of global innovation index, reads the Resolution signed by Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong.

The Southeast Asian country jumped three places on the 2019 GII rankings to 42nd out of 129 economies around the world, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reported last July.

With this improvement, Viet Nam moved up 17 places since 2016, the highest ranking the country has achieved so far.

Viet Nam expects to be among 40 countries with best GII ranking and increase digital economy to 30% GDP by 2030 and one of the leading hubs for startups and innovation in Asia by 2045.

To achieve the above goals, the Resolution rolls out a series of guidelines, including design and realization of a national strategy on development of tech companies, giving priority to the development of digital and high-tech businesses.

Active participation in the 4th Industrial Revolution is the inevitably objective requirement of special significance for Viet Nam to achieve breakthroughs in socio-economic development process, the Resolution affirms./.
